You'll also discover how pharmacists can lead in interdisciplinary teams, drive innovation in personalised and digital medicine, and tackle the biggest public health challenges of our time. 

Pharmacists combine scientific expertise with frontline healthcare as the medicine experts. They play a vital role in patient care, advising on the safe and effective use of medicines, supporting people with long-term conditions, and promoting better public health. Often the first point of contact for healthcare advice, pharmacists work in community, hospital, and GP settings. 

The profession of pharmacy is going through an exciting period of change. New鈥痵tandards for the 鈥痯ublished by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) – the regulatory body for pharmacy – will ensure that pharmacists are ready to independently prescribe from the point of registration. 

As a Pharmacist, you will find a variety of鈥痟ealthcare roles available as a valued member of the clinical team, ranging from the hospital鈥痯harmacy and鈥痗ommunity鈥痯harmacy to primary care, the pharmaceutical industry and academia.鈥�

Becoming a Pharmacist 

To become a fully registered pharmacist in the UK, you must first complete a four-year MPharm (Integrated Masters) degree, followed by a structured 12-month foundation training year in practice. You must also pass the GPhC registration assessment to be eligible to apply to register with the GPhC and practise as a pharmacist. This course is your first step on that journey, giving you the scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and professional values needed to succeed.

This module introduces the core scientific and professional principles that underpin modern pharmacy practice. You will develop an understanding of medicines, how they are designed and used, and the role of pharmacists in delivering safe and effective patient care.

This integrated module explores the scientific and clinical foundations of common gastrointestinal conditions and minor ailments. You wil learn how pharmacists assess symptoms, support self-care, and provide safe, evidence-based advice in community pharmacy settings.

This practice-focused module helps you begin your development as pharmacy professionals through placement experiences, reflective practice, and personal development activities. You will start building your professional portfolio while developing the behaviours and values expected of future pharmacists. 

This integrated module explores the management of long-term cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine conditions, combining pharmaceutical science with clinical decision-making and patient-centred care. You will develop your understanding of medicines optimisation, evidence-based practice and the pharmacist's role in hospital and long-term care settings.

This module focuses on the pharmaceutical and clinical management of infections, renal and electrolyte disorders, dermatological conditions, and medical emergencies. You will develop the knowledge and skills required to contribute to acute and hospital-based patient care, antimicrobial stewardship and medicines optimisation. 

This practice-based module develops your professional skills through extended hospital and community placements. You will build your confidence in patient-facing care, interprofessional working, reflective practice and professional development while gathering evidence towards pharmacy practice competencies.

This advanced integrated module focuses on complex and sensitive areas of pharmacy practice, including women's health, pain management, mental health, oncology and palliative care. You will develop the clinical knowledge, consultation skills and professional judgement required for patient-centred care in primary care and general practice settings.

This module enables you to undertake an independent research project, developing the critical appraisal, analytical and research skills that underpin evidence-based pharmacy practice. You will work closely with academic supervisors to investigate a pharmaceutical, clinical or practice-based research question.

This practice-based module supports you in developing greater independence, leadership and clinical reasoning through placements in a range of patient-facing environments. You continue to build your professional portfolio while preparing for increasingly complex pharmacy practice. 

This module prepares you for the future of pharmacy by exploring complex patient care, emerging therapies and advances in healthcare technology. You will apply clinical knowledge to the management of multimorbidity and polypharmacy while considering innovation, population health and personalised medicine.

This capstone module prepares you for Foundation Training through advanced clinical decision-making, leadership development and prescribing readiness. You will consolidate your learning across community, hospital and primary care settings while exploring digital innovation, global health and multidisciplinary working.

This final practice module supports you in demonstrating readiness for Foundation Training through advanced placement experiences and professional reflection. You will develop leadership skills, manage complex patient scenarios and build evidence of competence across the full range of GPhC learning outcomes.

We accept a range of equivalent qualifications in a suitable Science subject, including the International Baccalaureate (IB). If you’re unsure whether your qualifications meet our entry requirements, please contact the Admissions Team.

How to Apply Entry Requirements Explained

BTEC level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Biomedical Science, or Analytical and Forensic Science, or Physical Science). BTEC applicants must be studying all of the following modules:
Principles and Applications of Science I 
Principles and Applications of Science II
Applications of Organic Chemistry
Practical Chemical Analysis
Applications of Inorganic Chemistry
Industrial Chemical Reactions
BTEC applicants without the above modules will be required to have A Level Chemistry at grade B or above.

Access to HE Diploma (Science, Medicine, Medical Sciences, Health Sciences) with 30 Level 3 credits at Distinction in Science or Mathematics units and 15 credits at Merit or above. This must include 15 credits in Chemistry units achieved at Distinction. Where these are not included, A level Chemistry at grade B or above will be accepted.

Foundation/Preparatory Year will be considered on an individual basis by the MPharm Admissions Lead. We would generally expect a minimum grade of 60% in any chemistry modules.
